New Year In Your Ear
This could be the most overlooked programming tool in your arsenal. The imaging between Christmas and New Years. The focus is on Christmas by osmosis and we rarely give a wink to New Years Eve and New Years Day. Partially due to voice tracking and automated/syndicated programming. Being live from at least 8p-1a with a key talent will add credibility to your brand. Instead of format only and spots for New Years Eve parties at local clubs, you can spark your CMR station.

Will you be getting change back from your dollar in 2011?
Meaning...If you find some money in your budget, will you be adding air talent, marketing, research, explore more digital/smart phone attributes and new ways to operate in 2011? Just throwing money in the fire pit is probably not a great idea and won't keep you making budget suggestions long. Smart operating is the only way to keep her above water next year.

The Internet Is So Over
Monday, November 29, 2010
Almost as soon as it arrives, the Internet is on the decline.
You may find that hard to believe and I understand that. But some big mistakes are about to be made under the assumption that media content needs to be contoured for the Internet.
As recently as last week, we saw hints that the Internet had seen its finer days when a rumor circulated that Apple had banned single radio station apps from its popular app store. As it turned out, there is no apparent reason for immediate concern as Jacobs Media, one of radio’s leading app producers, said that

Finger Candy Black Friday!
What I am noticing is the clever way brands are using various Social Media Platforms to gain momentum as we enter the season of giving. These advertisements that work don’t sound like they are selling you something but appear as solutions: “Avoid Traffic-shop online at____”, “Hate Crowds try shopping online at___.”
If tradition holds, even in this economy, retailers whether brick and mortar or cyber, will see their business hit black today for the first time in a long time! Forecasters are calculating how much they think we'll spend on Black Friday-the day after Thanksgiving AND Cyber Monday-the Monday following the holiday weekend. These days kick off Christmas shopping season and are a strong indication of what to expect. Consumer spending makes up more than two-thirds of all economic activity in America. And this year there is a lot riding! Retailers such as JCPenney, Macys, Gap and Sears, have boosted not only their traditional promotional advertising efforts but are using social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Stores are offering freebies and slashing prices and using social media to promote their deals.

FTC Holiday Stuffing
Ken Anderson late of KBWF San Francisco has the fill-in nod at WXTU Philadelphia, while PD Shelly Easton searches for a successor to Leigh Richards who departs after 25 years at the station...Bob Barnett is the new OM for Entercom Rochester. He replaces John Thomas who joined KYGO Denver a few weeks back.
When Black Friday comes...
Not just a Steely Dan song, a real kick-off to the holiday shopping season. When thousands of local shoppers hit stores at 4a to shop until they drop. CMR needs to be on the air, talking to the shoppers with traffic reports, bargain reports, that are shared on your social media sites and the offering of web sites that list stores that will save you money while you shop. Your talent should be talking about this web site: BLACK FRIDAY DEALS

Sunday Driving with CMT Reality TV Star and Country Music Singer Marthia Sides
Meet Marthia Sides: Country Music Singer, CMT Reality TV Star, Host, Actress, Image Consultant who loves Antiques, Fashion & Entertaining! I recently met Marthia when I traveled to Nashville. She is a multi-talented Singer/Songwriter who puts the pieces of success together with her latest radio single for the holidays “Angels In The Snow” SPOILER: you will cry, but in a good way, and I can't stop thinking about this song! After speaking with Marthia, I discovered the same thing happened to her when she heard and then just knew she had to record it.
The Virginia-Born performer had a successful career off Broadway and in TV and film before launching her music career after a chance encounter with a songwriter while shooting the CMT reality show “Popularity Contest.”

Developing New Talent (Saturday Catch-Up) From Radio-Info
Developing New Talent
Nearly every time I visit a radio station client, I end up in a conversation with a concerned manager about the scarcity of new talent.
The bigger and more important question is NOT, “Where will we find new talent?” The most pressing question is, “What kind of talent do you really need?”

Dear Celebrities (and Wannabes)
This past week I had several conversations with people, that made me think, about what other people think. I am not sure why it is so important to be followed by a lot of people, yet not follow very many people?
Is it like, a bragging right? "I only follow X amount of people but thousands are following me"; is it low self-esteem? "I am not good enough because I follow too many people"; is it a prejudice? "People who follow too many people must not be interesting."
Maybe it's just an ego thing? I am the first to say, if you are meeting your Social Media goals, congratulations, please ignore me. However...what are your goals? Are you trying to connect with a very few amount of people? If thats the case, how do you explain some of the following facts:

How to improve the sound of your weekend programming
Planning for 2011 needs to include weekend programming, no matter the market size and station. For some reason in smaller markets, programmer's feel they have to wrap the station around syndication. When you employ syndication, you are not local, you are not talking about the community and the radio station. The average CMR has 21 hours of syndicated programming in relevant hours every weekend, not including a syndicated all night show, that would be 33 hours, more than half of the entire weekend.

Toys For Tots and a true holiday community builder
We ponder every year about this time, what we will do for the holidays? When I first danced with Country radio, while working part time at KPLX Dallas during December 1993, I was introduced to an awesome promotion, THE 24 HOUR LIVE TOY DRIVE. It ran in December several weeks before Christmas and tied the USMC Toys For Tots campaign into all Target stores for a 24 hour, two-day toy drive. Brad Chambers who was the PD and facilitator of the drive made sense when he said "In most markets, the Marines put the barrels in stores and they have nothing in them but trash". You raise the awareness if you take The Marines, the listeners and a high volume department store and tie them together.

How to write for your brand
Cat Country, The Wolf, Kiss, Kickin, Jake, The Bear and countless others are all the brand names of Country Music Radio stations. Most likely, the imaging and positioning for most of these stations involves simply using the brand name in the imaging. Scott Mahalick and Bob Glasco taught me years ago in Allentown, to write around the brand. I bought Cat Fancy magazine, The Cat In The Hat and more "cat" related books and magazines to write imaging. I also created my own "catisms" and we made a index/glossary of the representations of Cat Country 96.

Bob Pittman is almost better than tacos
Clear Channel announced today that MTV brainchild, WMAQ Chicago NBC O&O Country in Chicago, Time-Warner, WPEZ Pittsburgh where he invented call out research with Buzz Brindle is now running Clear Channel. The title says (Develop of Media Strategies, Interactive Design Development ya da ya da) - Proof is in the pudding! He is the new man at Clear Channel. He was hired by Bain Capitol and only answers to the board. My boy - Grand hire and there hasn't been anyone up in here at this caliber, than Bob! Bain must be serious. Hogan has to report to Pittman. Bob rocks ass, I remember under Time-Warner he also ran Six Flags. He ran Wally World!
Country Music Radio's holiday starts Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving is a fun holiday to image and produce. We usually voice track or part-timers take to the air on Thanksgiving Day. Now you can image and write around the part-time, voice tracked or cold segue dead zone. We came up with a cool concept called NO TALK, NO TURKEY THANKSGIVING in 1999 in Allentown at WCTO. The brainchild of Ed Walker, my APD, now PD of Star 102.1 in Kansas City, this is an imaging concept that ties the talent and the artists to the Thanksgiving holiday and feast.

Another Perspective on Social Media

Cid Carver is not your average up-and-coming marketing professional. A senior at Suffolk University, Cid has a vision for how social media is changing the worlds of education, marketing, and technology. Already, she has worked with two leading marketing firms, New York City based Situation Interactive and Boston based Regan Communications. And, as a young professional, she has been courageously outspoken about how most public relations and marketing campaigns are misusing Facebook and Twitter in trying to reach the younger end of the 25-54 year old demo.

Miranda - Me and Chuck Talking
Thanks to Buffy Cooper in 2005 for introducing me to Miranda Lambert. At KZSN Wichita, we played Me and Charlie Talking and then Kerosene. I ask Buffy if we could get her to play our monthly concert at a boots and belt buckle Country bar called SAM'S PLACE. Thank you Buck Owens. She said done, but can you get a group of folks together to do load out. Done, we got their early and met Miranda, the band and her dad Rick. They were awesome. What a show, I knew there was something here. From her showcase in Austin to this event and she was on her way to do her first CMA appearance after this show in Wichita.
FTC and KRIS COUNTRY review of the 44th CMA Awards from Kris Daniels
The CMA’s this year were incredible!! I was actually excited to watch and see the artists perform. I think country was in some sort of rut and just got out of it. This year “New” talent won awards; we didn’t have to hear the same old tired speeches. We got to see reaction and excitement!
During the awards show I was on my phone on FB going back and forth with Listeners … it was hard to keep up because everyone wanted to voice their opinion or ask a question…it was great and so much fun!!! For the ACM’s we will do a chat room on our website. I suggest every Morning show do this with their listeners….forget the days of the viewing parties at a restaurant or bar now it’s done over FB!!
Can we still play New Country and gold titles from the 90's?
The answer is yes, but the titles from the 90's must have a sonic sound fit with today's new artists and NEW COUNTRY. I remember when 80's gold was loosing it's shine in the late 90's when I started in Country Music Radio. The Rusty Walker music list had a category of 35-50 songs that tested well from the 80's, but you wouldn't want to play those a lot with the direction of current and recurrent music. They were a drop
option at the end of the hour. The Judd's, Reba, Alabama, George Strait and Keith Whitley.

Zac Brown and the broken down hooptie bus
Kris Daniels and I added Chicken Fried at KHGE from their MY SPACE page in early Summer 2008. They headed towards Fresno to play for fans and to thank us for the airplay. One block from the station on a patented 107 degree Fresno day, their ghetto bus broke down. Our entire promotions team raced to pick them up and ferry the instruments to the station.
I have often wondered what did they do with the junker bus and what does the new one look like? Tonight they rock the 44th Country Music Awards on ABC. A long way to the top of you want to Country/Rock and Roll and they've done it.
A blogging we will go....
Jessica and I are ready to begin hosting your blogs and websites as links on FTC. Kris Daniel's KRIS COUNTRY is the first and we would like you to submit your links to Jessica Northey
We are reaching out to air talent, consultants, programmer's and artists to submit their links to Jessica. We will help you and ask in return you link FTC on your blog. Together, FULL THROTTLE COUNTRY and Country Music Radio will go full circle with social media.

linked personality blog: KRIS COUNTRY Also Thursday: Is your gold library in sync with your currents-re currents? It doesn't make any sense to play THE BAND PERRY, DIERKS BENTLEY, MIRANDA LAMBERT and your gold titles include: THE DANCE, SHOULD'VE BEEN A COWBOY and HIGH COTTON.

The Transition Continues
Chuck Geiger and I obviouslyhave been thinking the same thing this week with all of the exciting new artists as the 44thAnnual Country Music Awards in Nashville formally recognizes the constant changing of the guard which keeps country music and radio relevant and vital, welcoming new listeners year after year.
CMA and CMR - Bonded together for the first time in a decade
How many times have you attended the awards or watched it on TV and said in unison: "It's the same performers and artists every year?" Tonight is going to blow your mind as Kramer would say in Seinfeld. Entertainer of the year three new artists, Lady Antebellum, Zac Brown and Miranda Lambert, all new superstars in Country. Brad Paisley and Keith Urban are the mainstays.

Veterans of Past, Present and Future - Honor them this Thursday!
Thursday is Veteran's Day, some towns have parades and celebrations to honor our fighting men and women who have served this Country honorably. You want to plan to honor our troops, out of a stop-set with an imaging piece into a VET SONG.
FTC WEDS: Do the Country Music Awards and Country Music Radio have anything in common? You betcha this year they sure do.
FTC's Chuck Geiger writes about the correlation of the awards and the new musical direction of Country Music Radio. For the first time in a decade, the artists are in sync with the music on radio. Some of the performers on tomorrow nights show, would have cut away breaks a few years ago, they are up for major awards.
FTC EMPLOYMENT TIPS: Are you utilizing Social Media for your search?
More than just email and attachments, CMR job applicants need to be using and utilizing all forms of Social Media. From Likedin to Twitter, Facebook and blogs, you should be covering all your bases. Your message should be clear and concise, most employers are reading your email on a Blackberry or IPhone. They don't have time for elaborate attachments and wordy proses. Twitter gets to the point in 140 characters and your postioning should do that.
- Tell them what you've accomplished.
- What and where did you accomplish your growth?
- Use simple, easy to read bullet points.
- Eliminate any negatives concerning past employers or circumstances from your Social Media pages.
- Do not post anything in your profile or status up dates that could make you look like a hiring risk.

Seeing the Forrest Through the Trees
by Jessica NortheyTo get what you want in life; you first have to decide what you want!
If I have said it once I have said in a bazillion times, "determine goals and manage your own expectations!" This is true for most things in life, business and most definitely, Social Media.Recently great things have been happening for my clients, my company and me, personally! This didn't happen over night. I started out a couple years ago with an entirely different plan. As the economy changed, business plans changed, I had to also. I knew I wanted to be of service, and help people use Social and New Media strategically to accomplish productivity goals for their businesses.

Conversation IS the NEW Campaign!
by Jessica Northey
Are you having conversations with your followers or are you just babbling at them and not listening?
My philosophy has been to thank everyone who retweets or reposts me, @reply to those who talk to me or about me thank those who mention me or “shoutout” at me. And while this can be an arduous task for me with close to 90,000 followers, I work from home and am monitoring conversation for clients all day long; so it is easy for me to switch from an email or telephone call to my tweetdeck and respond to all that have talked to me. I have conditioned myself for this the past two years and what takes some people hours, takes me just moments.
Now, this is just one part of the process.

Fall back creative imaging
Sunday morning at 2a, we fall back to 1a. Here are some creative ways to imaging the time change:
- Quick sweepers and promos with clock ticking talking about the time change and to change batteries in your smoke detectors.
- Creative promos about the change (Time - Pink Floyd intro) You gain an extra hour of NEW COUNTRY for 6 months.
- Funny promos about forgetting to set your clocks back and showing up an hour early to church.
