Morning shows and The Community
Country Music Radio morning shows need to digress to the basics and back to their roots. Channel the spirit of past, present and future: W. Steven Martin at KNIX, Bob Robbins at KSSN Little Rock, Cornbread at WIL and make a connection with the community again. Simply wheeling and dealing pop culture interactives every morning won't be the deciding factor to how you win. Making a connection with the community is the key.
If you are one of those morning shows under contract and only work five days a week. You can stop reading now. Morning shows that want to continue to make a connection with the audience in PPM markets need to relate to the community and public. They need to adopt community service organizations. KYNG (Young Country) in Dallas had the (talent's name) charity of the month.
5 Ways Charities Will Be Using Social Media In 2011
All over the Country and ending today at 4p (Pacific), Wal-Mart and Facebook are soliciting "likes" for your individual cities to feed the hungry. The winning city gets one million dollars in aid. TV and radio are all over this promoting it. Fresno is #2 to Salt Lake City. Read what George has to say about using Social Media in connection with community building.
Social media provides the perfect platform for non-profit organizations and charities to raise campaign awareness, increase donations and actively engage with a wide online audience. As the increase in social media and online PR activity continues to grow into 2011, an increasing number of charities are starting to incorporate social media platforms into their promotional strategies. In light of this, I have outlined 5 key social media opportunities more and more charities will be making the most of in the New Year.
All the best in 2011 - The year of change in Country Music Radio!
All the best to you in 2011, may this be the year that your strive for your goals and connect with your dreams. I plan on a truly rewarding 2011. Shoot, let's all do it. This is the year we should all reconnect with our basic radio roots and reflect on how we became enthralled with the business and fun of radio. No matter what the hurdles, they will continue, we need to put our best foot forward and continue hammering home great radio. We have the tools, our creative soul and individuality which makes all truly able to rise above the hindrances to perform at the highest level possible. From FTC to you - Happy New Year! - 2011 The year of moving forward and getting it done.

Three C's
Alan Burns uses the three C's in his recent study of what's missing for women in contemporary radio. If we close the gap on the slight distance between what women want from radio and what we are currently offering, we will see more of an attraction verses a nose turning effect for the 25% that think there is a dis-connect. Convenience, Companionship and Community make up the easy comprehend, harder to execute Three C's. We are portable and easy to use, we can go anywhere, making radio a Convenience. Companionship while listeners get ready and drive to work, running errands, outside sales, long trips and of course listening at work. Community, Alan Burns says this is more than just reading PSA's. This is what is missing from radio today. Air talent are just talking heads. They don't relate to the listeners about what is going on in the community. I would always tell my air talent, make a mental note from the buzz, the paper, local television news, there is always three things going on you can talk about over a record intro.
New Years 2011 Resolutions - Turn it up!
I got the adrenaline from watching FULL THROTTLE SALOON on Tru TV. I like the way Michael Ballard, the owner manages the bar and entertainment emporium in Sturgis, SD. He banks the entire year on one week of debauchery at the rally. He runs at a high-octane level and covers all the small stuff, making sure no stone is left unturned.
We need to manage our Country Music Radio station's like this; Hands on with every element of the station being inspected, infected and rejected. Turn up your managerial heat. From the lowest air talent on the totem pole to the morning show, everyone needs love too.
If you want to be the master of your domain and make sure everything is in tip-top shape, the only way is too take an active role in running your radio station.

Who’s Sleeping on "The Porch" Tonight?
You can bet that it won’t be Country Music Sensation CJaye LeRose, as she continues to attract huge audiences through YouTube and Twitter.On December 29th, fellow Country Music Artists Jesse Rice and Chase Rice released a parody about CJaye’s song “The Porch” titled "My Money”.
“Chase (CBS' Survivor Nicaragua Cast Member) and I were talking about songs on XM11 that we like and I said, CJaye LeRose's song, "The Porch" was one of my favorites. I just think it's catchy and has a cool spunk to it! So, I told Chase that we should do a response and counter her song with a man's point-of-view” – Jesse Rice
“It was a great surprise to hear that Jesse and Chase had released “My Money” in response to my song. I think most women would agree that every now and then, her man needs a 'night on the porch'. Put me on the porch and I’m off to the Hilton, don’t' forget we share the same bank account *wink wink*”
- CJaye LeRose
CJaye has racked up more than 1 million video views on YouTube and over 16,000 followers on Twitter. Recently, “The Porch,” produced in her own home received national airplay on Nashville XM11!
As soon as she finishes writing a song, she performs it in her living room and posts it on YouTube. She is currently putting the finishing touches on her studio debut album, slated for a March release.

Yes indeed, we need to make that part of our charging system, out with the old and in with the new, that we drive harder and smarter in 2011. Working with and developing a true life group reflective, community building and wireless wizards to talk to our 32 year old woman in Country Music Radio.
Pandora vs. Radio Internet
We got a few comments about Pandora, like "they have no soul" and "thanks for the holiday cheer". According to one major CMR consultant, "it's over when they get into new cars."This is from INSIDE RADIO. This is just the facts,
It was arguably the year of Pandora with month after month of growth for the streaming music service, with its users and ad revenue reaching new highs. Founder Tim Westergren won’t say if Pandora was profitable in 2010, explaining they’re focusing on more than the bottom line. “It’s not the principle goal right now — we’re focused on growth,” he says.

Rise and Shine from Doug Erickson
It's time. Time to shake off the torpor of the past couple of years.
Time to stop using your VP of Programming, PPM, your workload, formatics -- whatever -- as an excuse.
It's time to perform.
This is Show Business, baby, and the lights are up; the audience is expecting everything you've got.
The audience. Remember them? The tens of thousands, sometimes millions who need what you do, who want a reason to smile, to laugh, to connect emotionally right now, and they've turned to you for it.
This is what you do. This is why you're here.
Don't ever waste even one performance.
You're on!

The disconnect is with the audience, not the music!
I have read everything Sean Ross has written in the many years he has been at the forefront of trade journal communications. In his recent ROSS ON RADIO on the popular RADIO-INFO site, he recently wrote about a disconnect with morning shows and music, then all day parts and music. My personal belief in Country Music Radio, there is too much of a music connection. I have always felt the talent talk about mundane music information way too much. I have never been a fan of the morning show focusing on longer than T&A breaks as part of their back sells in mornings. Long music breaks are a lazy way for CMR morning shows to get through a break.
New Year's Resolution: Sweat the small stuff...
It's amazing how many radio stations and expressly Country Music Radio stations operate at just a simple performance level, with zero to little attention to detail. Oh sure, the programmers are all busy in department head meetings and talking to record company reps. Somewhere, somehow it's been embedded upon programmers that this is an administrative game and not a creative genre. As long as the time cards are totaled and signed, everything is going to be great. This is a creative game and you need to pull it together to make it happen in 2011.
2010 meet 2011 From Jon Watkins KEGA Salt Lake City
Live and local is coming back! Even in PPM, a live jock sounds great. Wishful thinking? LeeAnn Rimes will continue talking about how she doesn't want to talk about her divorce. What challenges did you face in 2010 and next year? Budget cuts, smaller staffs and tighter PPM friendly playlists Your thoughts on the direction of the music and Sonic Sound of Country Music Radio? There are some great Country acts in radio right now. The CMAs were huge and helped Country. My big question is- who is our next big "A" star? Where's our next Kenny or Tim? We have some "Bs" and a lot of "Cs" but who will break through? |

2010: WHAT'S NEXT FOR COUNTRY PROGRAMMING in 2011 with Craig Powers
Craig is the VP/Programming for Cameron Broadcasting, the former KIK-FM Orange County CMR PD chimes in for the end of the year.
What's in store for Country Music Radio in 2011?
I would need a crystal ball for that answer. Whatever it is I’m looking forward to it!
What challenges did you face in 2010 and next year?
All 6 of my stations burned to the ground, but we rebuilt from the bottom up, have a great new location, new state of the art studios and a new start!
Your thoughts on the direction of the music and
Sonic Sound of Country Music Radio?
Right now there is a great variety of country music to choose from and in my opinion that is optimal for the format. This keeps the older demos happy and brings new young demos to the format as well. From the traditional sounds of Alan Jackson and George Strait to the fresh new Pop Country sounds of the Trailer Choir, Jane Dear Girls, Katie Armiger and many, many more! I love the fact that I can hear great classics like Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Merle, George and more, followed by Miranda, Zac, Jason, Lady A…Then some 90’s Garth, Clint and Brooks and Dunn on K-Flag Country! What a killer variety of music! No other format can offer the variety that Country music can and reach the broadest audience all on one station!

Clear Channel's KHGE Fresno flips from Big Country to 102.7 The Wolf
After a two month run as a Country Christmas station, CC KHGE Fresno has flipped to 102.7 The Wolf John Willyard is the new station voice. Station is billing itself as THE VALLEY'S NEW COUNTRY. As of present there's no air talent and the station is airing commercials. It was five years ago next week the station became CAT COUNTRY 102.7 and then BIG COUNTRY 102.7. The music style is very current-intensive with tight rotations. Chris Young "Voices" has aired three times today in listening from 9a-4p. KSD-FM St. Louis is using much the same direction under SVP Jon Zellner who orchestrated the Fresno change.

WHERE'S THE CONNECTION
I was reading ALL ABOUT COUNTRY'S weekly poll, "Is your station voice on more than your talent" and so far: Station voice exceeds local talent by a landslide. Have we gotten so lazy, that even in these economic conditions, we are just plugging sweepers into the clocks?
Even with pre-recorded programming and voice-tracked shift, we can get creative. Sorry: But it does entail some work. Shifts without talent can be real people talking about the station in breaks, much like talent breaks. "Hi this is Bobby Martin in Cloverdale and your listening to Country 101.5, home of Big D and Bubba tomorrow morning with fun and music in the morning". Combined with names of the recorded shift. No talent either live or recorded on Sundays? Try "Country 101.5's 7th Day - Country and fun for the families official day off."
Seven Digital Media Trends of 2011
With 2011 on the horizon, this week features an overview of the top seven digital media trends coming in 2011.
1. Print Goes to the TabletReinvention and new digital distribution is better late than never for print media. Some big breakthroughs are on the way for print media moving onto the tablet. Touch screens are the new newsprint.
Last month, a new iPad only newspaper was announced by Apple and News Corp. Rupert Murdoch is investing $30 million to create The Daily, a new “paper” that will have no website and… no paper. It will only be available through an iPad application, which will cost $0.99 per week to use.

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS
by Clement Clarke Moore
or Henry Livingston and Chuck Geiger
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all up in the station
Not a creature was stirring, nowhere in the nation
The stockings were hung by the digital playback system with care,
In hopes that St. Marconi soon would be there;
The owners and managers were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of cost cutting danced in their heads;
And Miranda in her 'kerchief, and Blake in his cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the parking lot there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the studio chair to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the curtains and knocked down the Garth plaque with a crash;
No one in the station to report on the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day voice tracking to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature station van, and eight tiny guys that end careers,
With a little old driver, so lively and dark
I knew in a moment it must be St. Marc
More rapid than overnight PPM's his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Les! now, Hogan! now, Lew and Farid
On, David Fields! on Beasley! on, Pete Smith and Bruce Reese!
To the top of the ratings! to the top of the haul!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As the new year arrives each wants a piece of the pie;
When they meet with an obstacle, ad inventory to the sky,
So up to the house-top the PPM meters they flew,
With the van full of traded soda, and St. Marconi too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The STL was wired by a goof
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Marconi came with a bound.
He was dressed in a Zac Brown T-shirt, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of :60 spots at full rate he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a account executive just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
He ignored the no smoking sign -The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He looked like a big DJ from Des Moines, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
Like a cold segue in PPM, He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."
Happy Holidays....Go Home Now!

I think it’s good to know that you are not alone or the only person feeling this way! In fact, I had to muster up all I could, just to write this blog post.

I thought I would keep this Finger Candy Friday short and sweet and filled with Holiday wishes from me and Sissy!

From the Speculation Station: Los Angeles gets a new CMR station in 2011!
Here's the scenario. Saul Levine gets tired of Country and screwing the pooch with KKGO. They bail on the format for whatever incarnation of Rock Jeff Pollack talks him into. Then Bonneville readies KSWD their failing Triple A station for Country. Remember they failed at Country in San Francisco, but do real well with it in St. Louis and Cincinnati. In essence, these two station flip formats/intellectual property. KSWD becomes a new Country Music Station and KKGO might rebrand as KLSX (LA Classic Rock calls or better KMET).
With the money Bonneville has sunk into KSWD to get a one share, they would get double in return marketing a Country Music Radio Station in Los Angeles.
Hire a powerhouse Country Music Radio programmer who understands the combination of show-biz and music presentation styles and build a massive radio station with a strong morning show that could position themselves as a top five 25-54 show in 1-2 years with a staff of pimp air talent. Take off the harness of Hollywood. What spelled doom for KZLA. They quit trying to be a Country Music Radio station and played the Hollywood game. Same with John Sebastian playing Bob Seger and The Eagles. Play the hits and howdy up for LA and Orange County.

How to write for your brand
Cat Country, The Wolf, Kiss, Kickin, Jake, The Bear and countless others are all the brand names of Country Music Radio stations. Most likely, the imaging and positioning for most of these stations involves simply using the brand name in the imaging. Scott Mahalick and Bob Glasco taught me years ago in Allentown, to write around the brand. I bought Cat Fancy magazine, The Cat In The Hat and more "cat" related books and magazines to write imaging. I also created my own "catisms" and we made a index/glossary of the representations of Cat Country 96.

When Katy Perry is performing her new song on shows, she's doing it Country!
Katy Perry has performed her latest single “Firework” on everywhere from X Factor to VH1 Divas to the American Music Awards, and the performances have pretty much been the same each time. Big (mostly screechy) vocals, tons of flash, lots of sparks.
Perry decided to give the song a makeover when she paid a visit to The Ellen Show. She toned the pop production down in exchange for a few bluegrass guitar twangs and strings to give the song a country twist. We’re not sure if we care for this reimagining of “Firework.” The song works because the booming production gives the inspirational lyrics a fiery kick. This version just seems drab and depressing when the song is supposed to be uplifting.

What if we programmed Country like an AC?
I can't believe those words came out of my mouth? Those who know me, know I love the straight-ahead, full-throttle sound design that goes with an entertainment -based Country Music Radio station. This has to do with emulating AC/Hot AC's music clocks. I was chatting with Radio Crunch's Anthony Acampora last week and he said, "What if we looked at our clocks in Country a different way?" We are still dealing with the disconnect.
Beverlee Brannigan upped at Journal
Congrats to one of the brightest minds in CMR. Beverlee has been promoted to Director of Country programming at Journal. She joined KFDI in 2001 and has kept the station #1 under her watch. She will help with programming in Tulsa, Knoxville and continue with Springfield, MO Journals Tom Land makes the appointment after getting VP/Programming stripes himself and knocking cancer on it's nose. Both of the folks are as quality as it gets. I programmed against Bev for two and half years at KZSN Wichita and it no walk in the park. Her diligence, tenacity and longevity make her perfect for her new position.

For the first day of Winter - How to own the winter weather image:
If you are ignoring school closings because the morning man bitches about how long they are, when you face inclement weather, we have a way to zip them up and your CMR can own the winter weather image. When I first went to WCTO, I listened to B-104 The Clear Channel Adult Top-40. They had a huge weather and traffic image. When we went on we adopted the CAT COUNTRY 96 WEATHER CENTER. It was used as the opening line out of weather jingles and for the morning show.
