THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY AND YOU SHOULD BE ROCKIN'

THANK GOD IT’S FRIDAY It was Q-102 Philadelphia PD Mark Driscoll in the late 80’s who shortened air shifts on Friday and kicked-up the vibe. Rick Stacy at Power 99 in Atlanta kicked off the weekend with The Power 99 Weekend Blast-Off at 5p with out of format songs like TWIST AND SHOUT, WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU, and DOUBLE DUTCH BUS. At WCTO Cat Country 96 in Allentown we did this all day and spiked songs from WHITE LIGHTNIN’ to STILL GONNA DIE (Old Dogs). Our morning show Ken and Kitty would kick it off in the morning and the high-vibe would roll all day long. The calls would double from listeners wanting to hear out of format songs to telling us what they were going to do for the weekend. KZZP in Phoenix in the 80's did FRIDAY NIGHT PARTY PATROL with a very young and ready to explode Kevin Weatherly. They would hit all the parties in Phoenix and do breaks from the party. The morning show KELLY AND COMPANY would do their show live from a listeners house on Friday mornings. Guy Zapoleon knew about the impact Friday makes on the listening week. Most Country stations will play the drop-filled ‘FINALLY FRIDAY” and be done with it. It’s more than that – Friday is a major radio listening day second to Thursdays. The imaging needs to augment the weekend is knocking’ at the door. We actually developed a list of songs called FRIDAY SONGS. Kris Stevens of WXTU Philadelphia when he was the Cat Country 96 imaging guru built several kick ass versions of songs. EASTBOUND AND DOWN with drops from SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT. A version of COTTON-EYED JOE from Rednex with wild Friday drops. I took AARON TIPPIN’S “IT’S FRIDAY” and filled it with drops about the weekend and Friday. Next Friday – Try busting out and having some fun on the radio. After all it’s FRIDAY! Saturday we discuss THE FOUR POINT MARKETING MODEL - Spread the word about FULL THROTTLE COUNTRY - Idea exchange and information sharing.

  1. Party on Wayne, er Chuck, yep, Fridays are special and stations should reflect the spirit of their listeners in real time, that's the advantage of RADIO. Annnnnnd how about a fun spitit all the time. That's what made 98Rock Tampa Bay in the 90's the station everyone listened to even the country fans came to our events. You always expected a surprise when tuning in. One thing for sure was it was entertaining as hell.

Greg Mull was a wickedly great programmer.
