AS SMUG AS BUG IN A RUG Chuck Geiger

Remember the South Park episode where all the hybrid owners were so smug with their new hybrids, they were causing smug to cover the West, like smog. Ever run into a smug Country program director? The ones that think they are curing cancer and everything goes right for them. Smug as a bug in a rug sort of speak.

You know the ones that are always in the Radio Ink 40 Country Program Directors edition. That have radio stations that win by default and they really don’t sound that good, but they are industry associated great Country programmers.

The music community worships at the feet of these program directors and so do the companies they work for. Now I’m not saying there is anything wrong with this, but it does get as boring as the same artists winning the same awards on the same award shows every year. We need a new guard, a new compendium of Country program directors who are part of the turnaround and saving of our format and radio.

The new breed can be responsible for setting new standards in imaging, social media, morning show performance, talent development and stationality. I applaud the new generation of Country program directors, who will shape the format for years to come. This week we will be voting on the FTC POLL for the new breed of programmers.
