THE JONESBORO SAGA

BY AUSTIN KEYES

10 years ago while doing weekend/swing @ KLOS and Independent Record Promotion for the infamous Marko Babineau, I stumbled upon a group of Broadcasters in Jonesboro Arkansas. I’d call every week to sling new records on their rock station, and that’s when I first heard the name Christie Mathews. She was a rising star in Country Radio. I met her briefly at a CRS/Nashville lunch in 03’ and quickly learned why. Man, she was all about Country Radio; dedicated, talented, hardworking and passionate. She is successful and well liked. I am inspired by Christie’s story, it reminds me of some of the best memories I have had during my career as a broadcaster.

KDXY FM Jonesboro, AR is one of 3 country signals in a very competitive radio market. Add up the country shares and you see the picture.

I’ll never forget hearing the news that KDXY had won it’s first ever 12 plus book back in 2001. That morning is forever etched in my memory. In a Program Directors world, that is a monumental day. I had always been told that getting to the top was easy but staying there was the hard part. I wanted to know what that felt like, our whole team did.

We were the underdogs, out-powered ( literally) and out-numbered. We had a small staff… and a small budget. The one thing we did have that our competitors did not, was a group of hard headed, never-give-up, passionate radio professionals who loved the music we played and the community in which we lived. We were a team bursting with determination. A team that was fiercely competitive and most importantly UNITED for a common goal. We wanted success for our company, for our clients and for our families.

What sets our radio station apart from our competitors today remains the same. I feel our strongest asset is our team; from our support staff to sales, management, our creative team and air talent. We have a tenured staff averaging 12 plus years. That just doesn’t happen anymore.

The challenges we have faced economically have been tough for all of us. For some in our business, a no budget approach to promotions has been a shock. For us, it was a throwback to the good ole days as we saw the station grow. It’s really forced us to dig up that really creative part of ourselves and make it happen. We did it before and we’re doing it again.

There’s a piece of imaging on our station right now that says “Through storms and celebrations…we’ll always be here for you Fox Country!” That statement reflects what The Fox is all about.

We’ll be here to have fun, to inform and entertain you, but we’ll also be here to comfort you when disaster strikes. Whether its tornadoes that devastate whole communities, or when an ice storm hits and the power is out for 14 days. We won’t leave you. We will be there during the crisis and afterwards to help pick up the pieces. It’s our top responsibility as broadcasters.

It’s not just what we say at The Fox…it’s what we do.

5 years as a member of Country Radio Seminar Agenda Committee, Honored with Saga Communications Program Director of the Year in 2003, KDXY Honored with the CRS Small Market Humanitarian Station of the Year 2005 and 2006, Named one of “Radio Ink’s 2009 Top 20 Country Program Directors, Volunteer for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and founder of the Have A Heart Wish-A-Thon which has raised over $1 Million dollars in the past 11 years.
