Finger Candy Friday (err Thursday) on Pepsi, Happy New Year and Social Media in 2010

Happy New Years Eve and Welcome to 2010-almost.
I recently saw this headline, “Pepsi drops Super Bowl for Social Media.”  In case you didn’t hear, last week Pepsi announced that for the First time in 23 years, Pepsi's millions for advertising will go elsewhere.

Wednesday Morning Meeting Bobby Knight

2009: Rewind
So, what were the biggest trends in radio advertising in this pile of dog crap that we called 2009?

1. Fire sale prices in Q1 & Q2, followed by station-level panic as demand rose Q3 & Q4. What to do with all those annual buys locked in at clearance prices???

2. Web is a more important part of the mix and so is less clutter on the air.

3. The PPM just might be a racist.

4. The iPod now has an FM tuner. This is an important message to advertisers.

5. Shorter engagements with agencies, quarterly rather than annual buys abound.

6. Healthcare dollars started saving the day.

7. Who needs Pontiac and Saturn and Hummer and...

8. Being down 20% is the new flat; being down 10% is the new up 5%.

9. Hey, there are a few stations who were sold out in December!

10. Radio is still the most efficient mass media and it still produces outstanding results when the right message is combined with the right buy.

CNET's Top 10 of 2010

Songs instead of albums
Musicians will always find ways to record their music--it's a fundamental drive, like painting for a painter or writing for a writer. But I agree with Guttenberg that fewer musicians will release suites of songs organized around a common theme or sound. As much as I love my long-playing records, they arose out of economics rather than art--they were a convenient way for companies to bundle multiple songs (particularly songs that might not have sold as singles) in an affordable package. With digital files already taking the place of physical recordings, there's almost no economic reason for the album to persist. By 2020, the concept of the album will be an anachronism with a few vocal adherents--like vinyl records are today--but most music will be released and consumed as songs.

Special Event Imaging Chuck Geiger

With special event's coming in the New Year, like The St. Jude Radiothon, Children's Miracle Network and any cause event for your community, the only way to make it work is to image it. Build special imaging and create a format specifically for the event. One of the stupidest things to hear is, a Country station playing the usual 10-in-a-row, regular sweepers and normal programming and trying to squeeze in the special event cause programming. We applaud you if you already did this for your toy drive or Christmas
specials and New Years programming.

Here comes the format flips after Christmas

With the end of Christmas comes a ton of format shifts, most now due to the inability of the station to progress in a PPM world in the markets now evoking this technology. If ratings are the reason these stations are switching, are they really using ratings as a real reason to sell or just keeping up with the Joneses.

Saturday Morning and Some Helpful Social Media Suggestions for Job Seekers

It was a very long week! I am glad to just sit down at the computer and free-think for awhile.  It is amazing how the meaning of Christmas changes as well get older.  I remember gathering around the tree and being so excited to open presents.  I remember asking for whimsical gifts rather than tires for my car, like this year!
I enjoyed the true meaning of spending Christmas with my family and the religious beliefs I have that go with that! It was wonderful!  I also took Sissy with me to my Dad's parents and she worked the room like a Socialite but for food.  She only weighs 4 and half pounds but I think she is an even 5lbs today! It's hard to say no to those big browns

Finger Candy Friday on Thursday: Social Media in 2010...Predictions, Observations, Ideas.

I started this thought collection the other week and have gathered such great information. I find it interesting to hear your thoughts, ideas and predictions about Social Media in 2010.  I wonder what it would have looked like if I said 2020? Another  time....it is my greatest hope that you are enjoying the festivities of the season!  I have been spending time with American family visiting from the Middle East.  They use Social Media the same as us, but for them it is even more important, it is a tool to break away from the shackles of censorship. As we sit safely behind our desk, or in our homes the thought of the powerful ability to transfer our messages to the world is not what we are generally thinking.  We just want to be heard and feel important in society or maybe we are looking to sort through our own observations and diary them for future generations.  As we grow towards the future it is very evident to me how we search less for information as it seems to find us! Anytime I turn on my computer I am instantly greeted with local and National news.  I remember having to wait for the traffic report on the radio or the local news on the 10’s.  I can text, click or call to find out anything I want or need now. So we know how our audience uses media, what are we doing to be there with them as they consume?
Merry Christmas Eve and ENJOY!

CHRISTMAS EVE-EVE WEDS MORNING MEETING Bobby Knight

Wednesday Morning Meeting for December 23, 2009:

Damage Control: What to do when your top talent gets chased with a nine iron

Hot topic for GMs, GSMs, LSMs, and PDs this morning.  With so much recent focus on the Tiger Woods saga, it’s timely to discuss what to do when your station’s top talent gets into hot water.  Through the years, we’ve all lived through talent getting arrested with prostitutes, personalities charged with DUI, and even petty theft.  In the olden days, management simply dealt with these digressions by firing the personality.  But in today’s business climate, where the public is more forgiving of “mistakes,” and top talent is tied to significant client endorsement deals, we’re often forced to make delicate decisions.

HOLIDAY LOVE FOR OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS LOOKING FOR WORK

Good Afternoon, Chuck:

Looks like everything is going well for you.  "Full Throttle Country" is something I read quite regularly and gives me a lot of insight in a lot of different aspects of radio. I enjoy it tremendously. Chuck, I've been in radio almost 33 years, most of it spent in the Pacific Northwest.  I'm not completely out of work, but I do draw unemployment after losing two jobs due to layoff (6 years from 2001-07 mornings at oldies KDCQ Coos Bay and after 5 months in November, 2008 from AC KCST Florence OR).  During that time, since 2000 actually, I've been working weekends and some fill-in at KKNU Eugene.  I love country music and want to be a country radio personality on a regular basis.  Thanks for your help, Chuck.  Continued success to you, and Happy Holidays!

Best,

Bill Crawford

2010 Top Seven Predictions Jeff Ramsey

It’s that time of year again—the season for looking back, reflecting on what transpired over the course of the year, and simultaneously looking forward, to formulate thoughts, and perhaps some hope, for what the coming year will bring.

Like last year, I have seven predictions I’d like to share with our readers, many of which will get underway in 2010 but gather momentum and take on greater importance in subsequent years.

REWIND 2009: AN OPEN LETTER TO US FROM A FORMER PD

We were first put this up, it scored a lot of comments: One of the most commented on peices
on FTC.

First of all, let me begin by stating that I got into radio for the same reason as most; the passion for the music(all music) and the love of great radio. The kind of radio that was created in the 70’s and flourished in the 80’s, before stagnating in the 90’s. The new decade began on a bad note. As the internet’s popularity grew so did people’s fascination with getting whatever they wanted-when they wanted it…even if they had to steal it. In 9 years, the only thing that’s changed is the number of people broadcasting the music. Even after Clear Channel’s Pinkslip-a-palooza in the first few years of 2000, radio rebounded recognizing that radio needs to be live and local. What happened? Did we forget, in just 6 years time, that people need their local stations to be “local”? I read a quote from one of CC’s spokespeople after the huge layoffs earlier in the year. It said something to the effect of…”we’re still committed to delivering the best product for our advertisers”. WHAT?!? Since when did the FCC start granting licenses to broadcasters to serve a business’ need to find customers? We are not “playing radio” to bring Joe ‘the locksmith’ a new client. We serve our communities, surrounding the city of license, with content; music, news, alerts, weather, opinions and so on.

THE CEO'S NEW CLOTHES Chuck Geiger

As a programmer, I never had the pleasure of working with cash packed radio stations, that spent thousands on research and marketing. I usually was gifted with radio stations that needed elbow grease and spit and fire. This means you had to rise above the norm and proceed with passion and creativity. Too many radio station through the 90's and up to 2008 were immersed in call out research, perceptual studies, auditorium music testing, database and telemarketing. To quote Seinfeld "Not that there's anything wrong with that". What it did was soften the approach, entertainment value and show biz applied to the art end of the spectrum. Too much science or left brain and we dull a station up. Country stations especially were totally music-driven with no regard to personality or stationality.

MONDAY BOTTOM LINE INCREASES Loyd Ford

The Two Timeless Ways To Increase Bottom-Line
By Loyd Ford Americalist1@aol.com Toll free: 877-475-6864

There are two different ways to increase the positivity on your bottom –line in the broadcast business. You can cut expenses or increase ratings (previously and still currently known as raising value).
Over the course of the last decade we have seen many cuts in jobs and cuts in expenses to make bottom lines look more pleasant. The focus has been on how to reduce what it costs to produce the product and maximize the appearance of profit so that companies can exclusively grow their bottom-line. This is largely the easiest way to produce more temporary bottom-line improvement, but it comes with a cost. While everyone knows that cutting expenses can sharply cut long-term value, it creates the appearance of “gains in the now. “ So, over the course of the last ten to fifteen years, cutting and reduction in expenses has been primarily the process “in play.”

REWIND 2009 - WHAT WENT WRONG ON OUR SIDE Chuck Geiger

You will have to be in this business longer than 10 years to remember the following. When radio station’s had openings and they actually recruited for the best sounding talent available to fit the motif in place. Program Director’s would have openings and search the Country, without streaming and MP3’s to find talent. Networking and hard work applied on the employers part to find talent that fit the direction of the station. You knew you had to be of certain caliber to apply for certain jobs in radio, regardless of the format. Salaries and benefits were instinctual.

The Digital Daypart - Using Social Media to Win Big in 2010

by Jessica Northey
This past week I took the last Conclave webinar of the year featuring digital-age entrepreneur Doug Zanger addressing, The Digital Daypart - Using Social Media to Win Big in 2010 and hosted by Jay Philpott.  Those of you who are not familiar with the Conclave, this organization was founded as a regional gathering of communications professionals. “Through education, the Conclave’s mission is to improve the quality of broadcasting and related industries so they may better serve the public interest.” In order to do this the Conclave conducts seminars throughout the year keeping with its mission statement, and makes available on an annual basis broadcasting school and baccalaureate scholarships.

ARE YOU PROFESSING DOOM AND GLOOM? Chuck Geiger

I'm sure you can't get through the day without hearing "in this economy", "with cutbacks", "we don't have money for that" and more. My favorite now is: "It is what it is". This has been the mantra of radio for well over a year. It has rang like a bell with market managers, sales managers and account executives. But it's now infected the programming side of the building like the foot dragging after 9-11. This was mired in the management end, it was kept at bay. Now with programmers, music directors, morning shows, talent and production folks all whistling the same tune, there is limited creativity coming from radio. Only grumbling and doubting Thomas's. You can see it on the talent's social media sites. Lot's of whine with their cheese.

COUNTRY PROGRAMMING IN 2010 (Social Media) Part 4 Chuck Geiger

At FTC we understand the value of viral marketing and social networking. We wrote about Social Media first and employ the services of Jessica Northey, Finger Candy CEO/President to write about it, every Friday. She is attending the Conclave webinar this week on Social Media and will be writing about it on Friday.

GOOD MORNING 2010 (Morning Shows in 2010) Chuck Geiger

Great morning shows will continue to outperform their prospective stations and lead the way in starting the day in Country radio. Big morning show talent and the new stars on the scene are the impact players who lead the charge. The best ones will be wrapped on topicality, localims and listener interactions. They will reveal the real person on the air. Music and artists focused breaks, talking over the listeners heads and morning show babble won't cut it. Mornings shows are the last bastion and line of defense in the diminishing radio talent pool.

IT'S WHO YOU KNOW AND WHAT YOU KNOW (THE JOB SEARCH) Chuck Geiger

One would automatically think because of the decline in positions, when one becomes available, radio stations have a countless mecca of names and prowess to choose from. Not really true, Country stations are looking for a specific sound, region, personality, administrative needs and ability to play well with others. I read the PD Chronicles yesterday in All Access and the writer was talking about reading an old Radio and Records from 1985 and there were pages of jobs from PD's, MD's, morning shows, afternoons, weekends, nights, production and so forth. Sure the jobs are few and far between, but that doesn't change what the station's are looking for.

Whats Happening? Whats On Your Mind? What Are You Doing? from @JessicaNorthey

How do you answer these questions? It’s not polite or good SocialMediquette to divulge your bathroom practices, and unless you are looking for some menu ideas, discussing eating habits can be pretty lame as well. One of the questions people ask me the most is: “what should I tweet or post about?”

This is a question that can make or break you in Social Media.  I refer to it as, “Your Socialality.”
